Prickly Pear Cactus - Spineless
Height: 6-10 Feet
Spread: 6-12 Feet
Hardiness Zones: 9a-10b
Full Sun to Partial Shade
In the late Spring and through the Summer, large yellow and orange blooms blossom from the Spineless Prickly Pear. Birds and pollinators flock to these blooms. This plant has the cactus look without the danger of longer, sharper spines.
Althought it lacks these spines, it still has glochids, which can be irritating to the skin when the plant is not handled correctly. This can be avoided by grabbing the pads between the glochid dots. Highly drought tolerant with a low water need, the Spineless Prickly Pear requires very little maintenance. It has no particular preference to any type of soil, as long as it is well-draining.
